History Of Luanti (Minetest)

Luanti (formerly known as Minetest) is a free and open-source voxel game engine that started in October 2010.

Origins as Minetest-c55 (2010)

  • Creation: Perttu “celeron55” Ahola created the project in October 2010 to explore block-based sandbox mechanics inspired by Minecraft and Infiniminer.
  • Name Origin: It was initially named Minetest-c55, where “c55” stood for the creator’s online handle (celeron55).
  • Early Build: The early versions featured a single, basic built-in map generator running on 2D Perlin noise and acted as a singular clone game.

Evolution into a Game Engine (2013–2019)

  • Dropping the Suffix: As the community grew, the -c55 suffix was dropped, shortening the name to Minetest.
  • Lua Modding API: The introduction of the 0.4 series brought a robust Lua scripting system, allowing developers and players to create modular games, mods, and texture packs.
  • Shift in Identity: Because the project separated playable default content (Minetest Game) from the underlying C++ code, the community redefined it from a single game into a flexible voxel game engine.
  • ContentDB Launch: Version 5.0.0 (released in March 2019) introduced an online content repository (ContentDB) to make downloading community-made games and mods easier directly from the client menu.

Modern Enhancements and Rebranding (2020–Present)

  • Engine Improvements: Over the 5.x version cycle, developers added Android support, Zstd map compression, dynamic shader-based shadows, and forked the aging rendering backend into IrrlichtMt.
  • Renamed to Luanti (October 2024): To distance itself from being perceived as a mere Minecraft test clone and to reflect its true status as a robust creation platform, the project officially rebranded to Luanti on October 13, 2024.
  • Etymology: The name “Luanti” combines Lua (the scripting language used for mods) and luonti (the Finnish word for “creation”).
  • Current Status: Continuing regular updates (such as version 5.17.0 in August 2026), Luanti supports multiple operating systems—including Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android—functioning entirely as a community-driven engine for diverse voxel experiences.
